1 Cenote Dive

Let’s Go Dive a Cenote

About the trip

The Mexican Yucatan Peninsula is full of sinkholes formed during the last ice age. The earth in the south peninsula is made of limestone, which has collapsed and the cenotes were made. Once you get underwater you will see the spectacular formations of limestone, stalactites, and stalagmites formed thousands of years ago.

Here’s our favorite:

  • Dos Ojos. Dos Ojos means 2 eyes in Spanish, as it looks like a pair of eyes from above. But what’s underwater is even more impressive. You get to explore the Barbie Line – a vast open cavern with natural light. Or the Batcave line where in the middle of the dive we make it to the surface to check the bats inside a cavern filled with air. Dos Ojos is part of the largest underwater cave system in the world – Sac Actun. The water is incredibly clear, and dominated by a turquoise colour. The stalagmites and stalactites give the cave an air of mystery which is only heightened as you explore the tunnels and caves between the Two Eyes!
