The Yucatan peninsula is the only place in the world where you will find “cenotes”. They were formed by rain filtering down through the ground, dissolving the limestone. A process that took thousands of years. Vast underwater caves were then formed, as the roof collapsed and then filled with water. Creating one of the greatest adventure locations for divers all over the world – the flooded underwater cave systems of Riviera Maya.
Cenotes are considered today some of the clearest waters in the world with visibility of more than 100 meters. From beginners to tech divers, there’s a cenote for everyone!
Even being just sinkholes, the experience for divers is amazing: the halocline effect – where salt water meets freshwater is mesmerizing. Each cenote is unique – there are underwater flower gardens – like Carwash, or eerie underwater rivers with fallen trees like Angelita. Some are deep and reserved for Advanced divers only – such as the 119 m deep cenote the Pit.
Some of the most fascinating cenotes are located near Tulum. The famous Dos Ojos and Casa Cenote are a few minutes ride from the center. Casa Cenote is a popular snorkeling spot – and as it resembles an open water natural pool it is also a great location for a discovery dive or an Open Water Course.
Cenotes were also a very important part of the Ancient Mayas culture. It is thought that they were portals to the underworld, a way for the Mayan people to talk to the gods. But for sure, they were their fresh water reserves.
Did you know that Garden of Eden, is actually also a cenote, near Playa del Carmen, or as the locals call it: Jardin del Eden. The road between Tulum and Playa del Carmen is abundant in cenotes, with Dos Ojos also located there. It is a perfect place to try diving in some noncrowded cenotes. When bullshark season is over – cenote diving is still on from May till September.
