Playa del Carmen has become very famous in recent years because of its location. a small town between Tulum and Cancun
We know a lot of people are impatient to travel after confinement but sometimes the budget is short or simply we would like to save a little money one way or another. Here we will share with you some tips to explore Playa and around. Learn how to use foreign and local public transport as locals do and get unique experiences.
Playa del Carmen – Tulum
Follow these easy instructions to get to Tulum From Playa del Carmen.
From Playa downtown reach Juarez ave and walk to the opposite side of the beach. After 5 min walking you will see “el Ñero” taqueria on your left, turn left and continue one more block. the base of the minivans is just in the corner. you can hear people announcing the route to Tulum. Once you get in, tell the operator where you are going and they will let you know when you are arriving at your destination.
There are many places you can visit between these 2 towns. We have listed some of the most famous and interesting spots to visit. All these places are located in the same way and we estimated the time from Playa downtown.

Playa del Carmen – Cancun
Follow the same instructions above for Tulum, The base for both routes is at the same building but in different lanes. You will hear the operator announcing the trip to Cancun. Once you get in the van tell the operator where you are going, They let you know when you are arriving.

Playa – Chiquila – Holbox
When you are visiting the Mayan riviera it is hard not to hear about Holbox. This is an island located in front of Chiquila town. It can take up to 2 hours to get to this town and the fare is 200 pesos. If you are heading To Holbox. Go to Calle 2 and 25 ave, you can find the base of the minivan route.
Local transport in Playa
If you are planning to explore places around playa del Carmen we highly recommend renting a bike. Playa is a small town and it is easy to get to plenty of places by bike if it’s not possible you can also take local transport. Buses and minivans are concentrated on 30 ave. 6 blocks from downtown. Before getting in the van tell the operator where you are going and they will help you keep going the right way. Fares may vary depending on where you are going—fares round from 10 to 15 pesos.
Consider you should carry cash to pay the fares. We highly recommend carrying Mexican pesos so you can pay the exact fare. If you have taken adventures with Koox, you can ask your local guides and they kindly help you to take the best option.
ADO Bus Station
In order to keep fluent transportation, there are two bus stations, both have the same routes but different schedules. The main station is located at Playa del Carmen downtown, 5 ave and juarez ave. Inside you can find an atm, restrooms, snacks store, and waiting room.
The secondary station is located some blocks away. On 20 ave corner with 12th street. You can check schedules and buy tickets on ADO webpage. Common travel routes are Tulum, Puerto Morelos, Cancun, Chiquila, Bacalar.
